Kate Bray began classical vocal training in the late 1980s. She studied and performed throughout high school participating in regional and state competitions for classical vocal music, studying with William Mayclin and David Miller of Pendleton. She placed in the top 10 classical vocalists in the State of Oregon in 1991, and was awarded the National Arion Award for Music that year. She was given a generous scholarship with the help of David Miller and Blue Mountain Community College for the first two years of her education. After transferring to Whitman College to study cultural anthropology, and while taking a somewhat lengthy hiatus from performing, she continued to study music— focusing on jazz. She is a self-employed graphic designer, writer and nonprofit consultant, and has recently launched a membership-based web site encouraging community philanthropy, DonateWise.com. Her musical
influences include the usual suspects: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday,
but also include jazz greats Cesara Evora, Flor Purim, Astrud Gilberto, Tierney
Sutton and Karrin Allyson, who are her current favorites and
who provides a lot of material to practice with. |
